The Evening After The Night Before
Where does British politics go from here?
This is being written after a long night and not much sleep, so apologies in advance for any confusion that makes it onto the page. There were times in the past when I might have been able to stay up until 7am (once I heard the rumours of Liz Truss being in trouble there was no way I was going to miss the moment she hit the final point of Finding Out after her 49 days in Downing Street) and then power on through the next day after not much sleep. Hell, on some of those days I’d have been up at 5am on election day and spent the day pounding the streets before heading off to the count.
But let’s not look to the past, let’s consider the future and what comes next for Britain. Labour have increased their vote by a smidge and their seats by a landslide; the Tories have dropped their vote and their seats to the sort of levels since the days you could get a seat in the Commons by being a good friend of the local landowner; the Lib Dems have kept around the low vote total they’ve reached for the last decade but won more MPs than ever before; the SNP have collapsed; and the Greens and Reform have made breakthroughs, while independents have had one of their most successful and surprising nights since the Second World War.
